What is awareness?
Five years ago, almost to the day, on a very snowy and sub-freezing morning in Tallinn, we met with Dr. Helena Lass in her office to interview her for Exploring Forward Thinking Workplaces.
What made this interview so extraordinary were the many ways that Lass distinguished a new understanding of the self and who is really leading our lives.
One particularly memorable idea that stands out is that it was the first time someone had communicated a new understanding of awareness for me.
Or at least it was the first time I listened and got that something was exciting and powerful for me to learn and know.
However, I have to admit, the idea that “awareness always listens to your own will and is always self-directed” really didn’t make sense to me at the time.
I didn’t get it.
Didn’t I self-direct my awareness already?
In hindsight, no, I didn’t. And neither do most people.
According to Lass, our awareness gets hijacked because most of us really don’t know what it is and how to use it:
“If you don’t know what awareness truly is and how to use it, then your awareness remains on monkey mind regime. You become aware of things but in a random way. Most people have monkey mind because there is no education about how to discover where your awareness currently is and how to keep it there where you need it—and for as long as you need it to be there.”Helena Lass
Why do I think gaining a new understanding of awareness is so important?
Number one is because of what it leads to — greater insight.
That is greater insight into how to live and work in new ways to solve many of the problems and challenges that we face individually and collectively in modern society today.
Over the past year, my work has moved and evolved in new directions.
I believe what is mostly responsible for this change has been gaining a better understanding of my true self, which has given me a greater ability to direct my awareness.
An ability to gain greater insight is available to everyone, and I’d suggest urgently needed in the world today.
